Color and Shape Matching
This super cool activity we got from a local busy bag exchange between moms! I used it as a color matching game first and then as a shape matching game later.
MATERIALS
Large colorful buttons
Colored pencils
Thick paper
Prep by tracing each button with a matching colored pencil on a strip of paper. Create different patterns. If you have an older child this can easily be turned into a sequencing activity to practice patterns.
Begin by reviewing the colors of the buttons. I like to get an idea of what colors Finn is sure of which ones he is still learning. I choose a paper that has colors he knows first.
Demonstrate how the game is played out loud by saying things like, "I need to find a red heart button. Look here it is! I can place it right here on top of the red heart!"
Then have them try! I try not to point to the correct button or placement of colors that he's demonstrated he knows well, and instead say the colors out loud to help him, "You are looking for the yellow button, do you see yellow?" For colors that are new or he doesn't know I will point to the button or the paper and ask if he can place it or find it. When he does we review the color!
So there you go, an easy to make and store color and shape activity. This is a great one to break out on rainy days when we can't go outside. We also have fun lacing the buttons on a shoestring!
