Shaving Cream Art

A fun sensory and activity that lets children get messy!

MATERIALS: shaving cream

child safe craft paint

smock (if wanted)

tray (if you don't want the paint on your table)

card stock paper (if you want to make a print out of the shaving cream art)

This is going to be a hit with your child if they like getting messy like Finn does! To prep put 2 or 3 mounds of shaving cream on the table or tray. Next add the paint to beside or on top of the shaving cream. You can have the child identify the colors before you add them. Then the fun part, let them explore the textures and colors!

Some children might be hesitant to get their hands dirty, if so offer a paintbrush or spoon to move the shaving cream around. Let them squish and slide the shaving cream around until all the colors are incorporated.

Young preschoolers will enjoy the sensory play of the creamy shaving cream and watching the white shaving cream turn different colors. You can encourage them to draw in the shaving cream with their fingers or brush. Older children can practice writing letters, or draw a picture.

If you want to make a print take a piece of card stock and carefully lay it over the shaving cream. Press down gently, not hard enough to hit the table but hard enough the paint sinks into the paper. Let it sit for a second then carefully peel it up starting with one side working to the other. Let it try for a few minutes then scrape off the shaving cream. If you do not want to make a print then clean with warm water.
