Shape Hunt
MATERIALS
shape cards
shape items
look around your house for any shape you want to use. Some good places to look are:
puzzles (I already had shape puzzle)
toy food (you'll be amazed how many shapes are in there)
blocks
buttons
money
container lids
This was the first time we introduced shapes and he really enjoyed using his toys. To prep I made the cards out of card stock and drew on the shapes. I collected items for each shape beforehand. If you have a child who already has some shape recognition have them go around the house and help you collect items.
I first showed him each card and said the name of the shape. I asked him to repeat them back to me. After reviewing the cards a few times I laid them on the table and asked him to point to each one as I said the name of the shape. We did it together a couple times before he could do it on his own. Next I got out all the items I had collected.
I held up each item and said the name of the shape and pointed to the card that matched to help him understand they they were the same. I used my finger to trace the sides of the shape on the card and the item and had him try to do the same. Finally I put one item on each shape card to show him how the activity was done. I then let him take each item and try to place it in the correct spot. He needed some help and reminders, they won't get them all correct. If they put it on the wrong card pick it up and repeat the shape name, point to the correct card, and help them move it. Keep the cards somewhere to use again for the next time you review shapes!
